On the last Thursday of every month, throughout 2024, Gallo Record Company will be re-releasing previously unavailable albums from their archives on all streaming platforms, starting on 25th April 2024, as part of their Gallo Vault Thursdays.
The April releases will focus on the impressive catalogue of music by Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse, ‘Om’ Alec Khaoli and Funky Masike. Recordings from their Soweto Soul bands, The Beaters, Harari, Umoja and their solo work. These include rare projects such as Harari’s 1979 album Kala Harari and Botsotso, a lesser-known eponymous project produced by Hotstix and Om, whose mega albums Burn Out and Say You Love Me turn 40 this year.
Most of these catalogue gems were once available on early 78-inch shellacs, 33/45 vinyl records and CD, if not tape, and have never been available before on digital streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music or YouTube where most listeners now access their favourite music. And although some used to be on high rotation on radio, you will hardly hear them today, except on social media accounts of some avid collectors and appreciators
The re-releasing and re-issuing of these albums (and singles) is a part of telling the story of Gallo Music’s extensive catalogue that spans almost a century of Southern African music. The Gallo Record Company Vault manages some of the rarest recordings coveted by collectors and reissue labels worldwide. Through on-going digitising of these archives and daily uploads to streaming sites, the record label is servicing its legacy artists’ loyal superfan base and new audiences with an appetite for re-discovery of old nostalgic music they grew up on.
Releases for Gallo Archive Thursdays will include other renowned names such as: Ebony, Steve Kekana Mpharanyana and The Cannibals, The Elite Swingsters, Emma Teanet, amongst others. Gallo Record Company is a proud subsidiary of The Music Arena and Arena Holdings.
